To advance his career, Ayorinde “Ayo” Adeniji from Nigeria chose to pursue a Master's degree at Middlesex University London in the UK. In our interview, he explains how it was to move from Lagos to London and what he has learnt so far in his MSc course in Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Management.
Why did you choose Middlesex University London?
Middlesex is one of the few universities in the United Kingdom that offer a postgraduate course covering occupational safety as well as health and environmental topics.
I trained as a medical doctor, and taking the MSc in Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Management will help me progress towards specialising as an Occupational Physician. I also want to contribute to the development of the discipline in my home country Nigeria by participating in proffering solutions to its health, safety and environmental, operational and managerial challenges.
I also followed the advice of a friend from Dubai who recommended Middlesex for its good reputation in the field, and also because studying in a global city like London would mean being closer to great career opportunities.
What do you learn in your study programme?
Studying for the MSc has helped me expand my horizon in the field. During my studies, I got detailed insights into a broad range of topics - occupational law, psychology, wellbeing, occupational health and safety-at-work strategies, risk management, personnel management, and environmental management, to name but a few. Beyond those subjects, I have also had the chance to improve my academic research and business writing skills.
How are you enjoying London? Is it a good place for international students?
London is a great place to be, multicultural and dynamic in nature. I love the blend of old and new architecture which makes London unique. Although it is an expensive city, there are ways around it, such as taking advantage of all the discount options from transportation to shopping online and in stores. Also, there are major international stores and brands to shop from, as well as restaurant for various international cuisines. For international students planning to live in London, the magic to it is to plan ahead, meet people, ask questions, take advantage of all student friendly policies and stay focused.

What is the most surprising thing you learned about the UK and the British after you started studying there?
Diligence; people in United Kingdom work hard but fortunately, they also leverage on abundant opportunities. Another lesson learnt is punctuality, people here take timeliness very serious.
How expensive is it to study in London?
Studying in London is more expensive than in other cities in the United Kingdom. International students planning to study in London need to plan ahead, have a realistic budget, meet the university student help desk to clarify any financial query and try to cut out any excesses.
Do you participate in any extracurricular activities?
Although London is a vibrant city with lots of activities to take part in, I was mostly interested in fitness related activities. I enjoyed participating in fitness classes and socialising with like-minded students and staff in the process. There are nice sports centres all around which are open or accessible to all students as well.
What are students in your study programme like?
Multicultural and diversely mixed in terms of age. I find the older colleagues particularly interesting as they related well to everyone and they had a good sense of humour too.
How has Brexit affected your decision to study in the UK?
Brexit was not a consideration for me while searching for a University to study. My intention was to get knowledge and get a globally recognized degree, which the UK and Middlesex University are well suited to provide.
What kinds of jobs will you be applying for after graduation?
Occupational health and safety positions, or environmental manager positions with a view to improving my medical career, too, in a local or international setting. International corporation jobs will be most appreciated.
How would you sum up your experience at Middlesex University in one sentence?
