The English-taught BA in International and European Law (180 ECTS) provides the knowledge, skills and foundation needed for a law-oriented international career. Students develop an understanding of legal systems around the world and how they interact, as well as the international system, the European integration process, and European and international law-making. In addition, students will gain an understanding of legal theories and processes in order to provide legal and policy analysis. The flexible curriculum includes a lot of writing assignments, allowing students to hone their legal writing skills.
This programme stands out from other BA Law programmes taught at traditional law schools. Rather than receiving a typical training to become a lawyer at the Bar, students in this BA programme benefit from a more versatile approach to the curriculum, addressing legal issues from a more international and interdisciplinary perspective. Our law students work together on common projects with students who opted for another major, for example international affairs, allowing them to look at issues from different angles – a great asset in any corporate or public sector career.
Students can choose from a variety of prestigious internships in the Brussels area where they can apply legal concepts and tools in a practical international working environment. Prior to entering the workforce, graduates can pursue studies in a range of Master’s programmes in various fields (business, competition law, European integration, European law, environmental law, global banking & finance, human rights, international law, IP & information law, journalism, etc.). Graduates will be prepared for careers in the public sector, international organisations, diplomacy, public affairs, lobby organisations, NGOs, think tanks, international businesses, banks and consultancies. Entry into traditional legal graduate programmes is not guaranteed upon completion of the programme, as such entry depends on national requirements. This programme was established in 2016.
This BA in International and European Law is a programme of which the degree will be awarded by Vesalius College. Vesalius College is part of the Brussels School of Governance, an alliance with the Institute for European Studies, established in February 2021.
To complete this Bachelor’s degree, a minimum of 180 ECTS (credits or study points) is required. Most students complete the intense and rigorous study programme within 3 years of admission. The programme also requires the writing of a BA thesis.
The Brussels School of Governance (BSoG) is an alliance between the Institute for European Studies (°2002) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Vesalius College (°1987). For decades, both institutions have built up strong reputations as frontrunners in education, research, and academic services on the international scene. Both being associated with Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), one of Belgium’s prime universities with a strong internationalisation focus, the IES and VeCo decided to work together more closely as of 2018. In 2021, they launched the Brussels School of Governance.
