Turn science fiction into reality with Electrical Engineering.
What do you need to move a robot arm at high speed and with nano-level precision? How do you measure a nano G in order to monitor gravitational waves or the movements of buildings? How do you design a chip to work ten times faster than the current ones, while using ten times less power? How do you protect your computer from Wi-Fi code interception? If questions like these intrigue you, the three-year English- taught Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering (EE) at the University of Twente is the right choice for you.
In this Bachelor’s, you will be equipped to come up with high-tech solutions for practical problems. You will get to work on shaping tomorrow’s world.
There are dozens of reasons to sign up for this Bachelor’s. Find out about the top six here.
Create things that did not exist before
As an Electrical Engineer, you won’t stick to the beaten path. In our programme, you will learn to come up with and realise ground-breaking solutions that are faster, more accurate and more sustainable than anything we know now. You will not be copying things, instead, you will create applications that did not exist before. This programme will help give you a solid foundation for doing this and challenge you to push boundaries by applying your knowledge in the real world.
Enter a field that is developing at lightning speed
The future is unpredictable, especially in this field: 20 years ago it was unthinkable that people would be walking around with smartphones that we hardly even use to make phone calls with, but that we use to play games, watch films and send messages. In another 20 years' time, you may have developed the successor to the drone, you might be working on faster and better pattern recognition for medical or security applications, or on the energy supply of autonomous systems. A phone chip with the computing power of today’s supercomputers? You could be part of it!
Be as good as certain of getting a good job
Some 99% of our graduates find a job within a month of finishing their Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Experience shows that many of our alumni have received one or more job offers even before they graduate. So you can take your pick and enjoy a luxury position on the job market.
Take part in current research
During the bachelor’s you will spend around 25% of every module on practical skills by participating in projects. A number of these, such as the electronics project in which you design and build a wireless audio amplifier, take place in our own practice room. Other projects, like the photodiode project, are carried out in both the MESA+ Nanolab and in the advanced measurement labs of our Electrical Engineering chair. Both the bachelor's and master's are connected with existing research projects carried out by researchers at UT, other universities or the research departments at companies or scientific institutes. This means there are always challenging studies to get involved in: the problems you tackle are relevant and your research contributes to the next step in your research area.
Benefit from a high number of contact hours with motivated lecturers
Electrical Engineering is a small-scale programme with around 100 first year students. The distance between professors and students is small. This means you will receive plenty of personal guidance. Your input and ideas matters: together with student association Scintilla, we are constantly improving our education and we organise all sorts of study-related activities.
Grow as a 21st century professional, while enjoying our amazing campus
In addition to in-depth professional expertise, you will develop a broad package of 21st-century skills and personal competences in this programme, including a work ethos centring on self-reflection and lifelong learning. Our informal, personal approach is aimed at helping you flourish both professionally and personally. You will become more entrepreneurial and learn to apply academic knowledge to the realities of our society. Our project-based education will challenge you to look beyond disciplinary and cultural barriers and to work together with others. On top of that, you will have an unforgettable student experience thanks to our magnificent, green campus and the vibrant student city of Enschede – a place of knowledge, innovation and fun!
Students who successfully complete the EE programme often share similar traits. If you’re worried that you will not fit in if you didn’t spend your childhood dismantling electronic appliances, rest assured: it might be an asset, but it isn’t necessary. The common denominator among EE students, of course, is a keen interest in electrical engineering and electronics. This interest can be very broad, ranging from anything that contains a chip or transistor to robotics, and from nanotechnology to signal processing. In this broad field, the most important thing is that you are good at mathematics – the language of engineers – and abstract thinking and that you never tire of learning. Does this sound like you?
