Become a mathematical problem solver able to tackle challenging issues from technology to healthcare.
Can you predict when something goes viral? How do you model 5G? What happens in your brain when an epileptic seizure occurs? These questions all have one thing in common: mathematics is the way to come up with answers. In this 2 years master’s at the University of Twente (UT) you will apply mathematics to challenging issues in the most diverse sectors, ranging from technology to healthcare. You will learn how to discover new patterns and how to predict them through mathematical models. As a graduate you will have an impact on society as well as be in huge demand on the job market.
After obtaining your master’s you will have plenty of job opportunities to choose from. You could opt for a career in healthcare, e.g. using mathematics to improve capacity management, diagnostics, or employing mathematical neuroscience models to better understand how the human nervous system works. You could also work in the media industry, applying deep learning networks to achieve better social network filtering, use your knowledge of algorithms and machine learning to create models for predicting earthquakes, or supporting the energy transition. You might also pursue a career in optimisation in various fields, ranging from business to societal and environmental services. Of course, you can also choose to first expand your specialist knowledge base by pursuing a PhD or PDEng programme as offered by the UT’s Twente Graduate School (TGS).
Work on real-life cases from industry
The research groups within Applied Mathematics have strong ties with companies that present you and your fellow students with all kinds of real-world issues. For instance, you may find yourself helping a hospital to reduce their waiting lists. In addition, you will have lots of contacts with relevant professors and research groups while fulfilling the role of junior researcher within your chosen research group.
Work on meaningful solutions
You will work on relevant complex issues. Examples include modelling veins in the human body in order to search for causes of heart failure, developing models that can predict crime rates for different cities, or determining the most suitable location for a new fire station. With your research results and mathematical knowledge you will contribute to life-saving solutions.
Your career opportunities are guaranteed
More than ever, employers from the technical, financial, medical and social sectors are looking for mathematicians who can come up with practical applications. With your Master’s in Applied Mathematics you will find a job in no time.
Gain work experience during your master’s
In the second year, in addition to theoretical courses, you will be doing a compulsory internship at a company or organisation outside the UT. For example, our master's students choose financial organisations, traffic advice agencies, hospitals or major carrier companies such as KLM and NS. Some go to work at the Dutch Aerospace Center. Would you prefer to do an internship at a university outside the Netherlands? Go ahead, the choice is yours.
You co-decide the content of your programme
Your master’s is not all fixed. You have room to choose, as long as your choices don’t perturb the coherence of the programme as a whole. At the start of the first year, you and your specialisation coordinator will discuss how to compose a set of courses meeting your specific interests in that specialisation while complying with the rules of the specialisation. Apart from compulsory courses there is quite some flexibility here. In addition, you can go for a first-level teaching degree during your master’s. Did you already complete the Minor ‘Leren lesgeven’ in your bachelor’s? Then completing the master’s with a teaching degree included will only take you six additional months of studying. In some exceptional cases, students managed to finish within the two years of the Master’s in Applied Mathematics.
